Created in 1989, MARA has had a tremendous impact on the Meadowlane Neighborhood

About Us

The Meadowlane Area Residents Association’s (MARA) goal is to bring residents together, help create a vibrant neighborhood, and act as intermediary between residents and the City of Lincoln. MARA is not a Homeowners Association (HOA). Because of this, membership is completely voluntary and we do not have any regulations about private or public property.

Annual events held by MARA include a cleanup of Herbert Park, a neighborhood garage sale, an annual meeting, a neighborhood holiday lights decoration contest, and yard of the quarter. MARA also pays for the portable toilet at Herbert Park and helped pay for the park drinking fountain.

As an all volunteer association, we rely on donations and membership signup in order to host these events and finish neighborhood projects. Annual membership starts at just $5 for an individual, $8 for a family, and $35 for a businesses. We would love to have you as a part of the association! You can sign up online here.

The MARA Board meets on the second Tuesday of every other month starting in January at St. Andrews Lutheran Church from 7:30pm - 9:00pm. All residents are welcome to attend the MARA Board meetings.

About the Neighborhood

Covering an area of 2 square miles, the Meadowlane Neighborhood has over 2,000 homes, 60+ businesses, a public park, two apartment complexes, and two public neighborhood swimming pools. There is one public elementary school, Meadow Lane Elementary, and one private elementary/middle school, St. John the Apostle School. Four churches are in the neighborhood: Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church, Radiant Church, St. Andrews Lutheran Church, and St. John’s Catholic Church. Gateway Mall, East Park Plaza, Meridian Park Shopping Centre, Hyvee Grocery Store, and Russ’s Market are all less than a 5 minute drive from the neighborhood.

The affordable housing in Meadowlane allows for new homeowners, established families, retirees, and renters. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1950s to 1960s with some new homes built in the early 2000s. The Strauss Brothers Company built many of the houses in Meadowlane. These homes were designed by Lincoln architect Sid Campbell and featured three to four bedrooms, 1,000+ square feet of living space, and attached garages. The many curved streets were added to avoid a cookie cutter tract appearing neighborhood.

Meadowlane has one of the highest percentage of mature ash and oak trees in Lincoln. Most of these are street trees which provide great shade to the sidewalks and homes. Unfortunately, many of the ash trees in the neighborhood are in the process of being removed due to the Emerald Ash Borer. Efforts through the Parks Department are underway to replace these ash trees with a variety of new young trees.
